Hayrettin Gunc is a Research Associate at the Center for Advanced Urbanism (CAU) at MIT. He holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design with distinction from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Before coming to United States, Hayrettin was the co-founder of Herkes Icin Mimarlik (Architecture for All), a non-profit organization based in Istanbul that experiments with the structure and scope of architectural processes. His research and design interests explore bottom-up city making processes and civic engagement technologies. At the CAU, he is involved in a research project that examines the relationship between lighting and the socioeconomic characteristics of cities around US. Hayrettin continues continues to practice as an urban designer at Team Better Block where he explores ways to create quick, inexpensive, high-impact changes that improve and revitalize underused properties. Some of the projects that he participated were recently exhibited at the 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial, MoMA’s “Uneven Growth” and Vitra Turkey’s “Caution! Slippery Ground”.
